Survival of the Fittest
It takes a lot to survive in the wild - as the Survivors group found out on Thursday evening, it can be challenging to spend the night in complete wilderness, with only the tools in your pack and the determination to make it through until the next day. The group, who had been preparing all week for their adventure, went on a kayaking adventure Thursday afternoon, and soon found themselves stranded on a desert island, with nothing but the gear they had departed with.
The boys set up camp using their resources and tools, as well as a finely tuned knowledge of the outdoors, and with the help of instructors Alex, Andrew, and Dennis, their “desert island” had been converted into a campsite in no time. The boys utilized different materials to make individual tents, and worked together to start a fire and make food for dinner. Not only did they have to ration their food to make sure there was enough for everyone, but they also used teamwork to secure the food high above the ground so that it could not be reached by bears and other animals. But it wasn’t all survival tactics for the boys of the WFC: the experience was a fun adventure in teamwork, and hanging out with them Thursday evening felt a little like hanging out with a big group of friends on a camping trip!
As the evening began to pass, and the sun set over the harbor, the group made popcorn over the campfire and settled in for a night of fun and adventure. After dark, we sat around the fire and told scary stories, in true campfire style, and munched on snacks as the flashlight was passed from storyteller to storyteller. It was a fun and adventurous night of survival, and I’m happy to report that everyone made it safely back home, thanks to Captain Pete, who picked the group up early Friday morning on the Christeen. With camp packed up, and a night full of unforgettable memories, the boys headed home - proud to say that they are true survivors!
